Fish & Richardson added to the firm’s team of professionals with advanced technical degrees with the hiring of Dr. Caleb Bates in its Silicon Valley office. Bates, who has practiced law for five years, joins the firm’s patent prosecution and counseling practice as an associate. In total, Fish has 92 legal professionals with Ph.D.s across the firm’s 13 offices.
“We welcome Caleb to Fish and know that his background will further broaden the expertise we provide to clients,” states Michael Headley, Managing Principal of Fish’s Silicon Valley office. “Understanding the science behind our clients’ inventions is one of the many ways in which Fish distinguishes itself.”
Bates’ intellectual property law practice has an emphasis on patent prosecution, strategic counseling and global patent portfolio management for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and biotechnology fields. He has extensive experience in international patent prosecution, having managed the prosecution of applications in more than 40 jurisdictions worldwide.
He regularly advises and counsels clients, from start-ups and established companies to research institutions and venture capital firms, on the best strategies to both develop and leverage their IP assets. Additionally, Bates has experience counseling clients on licensing, investor and company due diligence, freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses as well as market clearance.
Prior to joining Fish, Bates practiced patent law at Knobbe Martens.
He received his J.D. in 2013 from Santa Clara University School of Law. In 2010, Bates earned his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Michigan where his graduate research involved the design, synthesis and mechanistic evaluation of small molecule modulators of eukaryotic gene transcription. He earned his B.S. in Biochemistry and History from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2004.
