Pacific Building Group, a long-standing and reputable San Diego-based general contractor, is celebrating the completion of the new Portside Pier, at a ribbon cutting ceremony being held today by the Port of San Diego. The spectacular project which broke ground in July 2018 includes a 42,000 square-foot, two-story building on top of a new pier along one of Southern California’s iconic, flagship waterfront restaurant sites: 1360 North Harbor Drive along the North Embarcadero. The project, developed by The Brigantine., Inc., designed by Tucker Sadler Architects and managed by B&G Consultants includes six indoor and outdoor dining options and viewing decks.
“Portside Pier is one of the most distinctive, challenging and iconic San Diego projects we’ve helped bring to life,” says Jim Roherty, president of Pacific Building Group. “From maintaining the safety of marine wildlife, to working off floating barges around tides and waves to implementing COVID-19 safety regulations, this project presented a unique set of circumstances our team effectively managed. The result is a beautiful dining destination for San Diegans and visitors to enjoy for years to come.”
To drive the pier’s 48 piles, upon which the dining establishments sit, Pacific Building Group executed a highly-coordinated effort with water quality advisors, biologists, fellow builders and designers and the Port of San Diego. Further, using BIM 3D modeling while navigating tide charts and utilizing a pulley system, the team flawlessly set nearly 400 utility sleeves and inserts into submerged concrete, resulting in marine-safe utilities to the building.
Some of the $25 million project’s most notable architectural features include curved steel and zinc shingles on a barrel-shaped roof representative of an ocean wave, two stick-framed glass structures stretching 26-feet and 31-feet tall that resemble fishing baskets, a 3,000-pound, three-dimensional octopus wall sculpture and more. Portside Pier’s eateries include Brigantine on the Bay, Miguel’s Cocina, Ketch Brewing, Top Sail, Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Gelato & Coffee Shop. The new waterfront dining destination also includes coastal viewing spots, free public access and a dock at the south end where boaters can dock.
Pacific Building Group’s Portside Pier team included Superintendent Randy Stoner, Senior Project Manager David McNiff and Project Manager Susie Slater.
