Fish & Richardson Opens Shenzhen Office

Fish & Richardson, the largest intellectual property law firm in the world, has opened its Representative Office in Shenzhen, China. Fish has helped China’s leading companies obtain, enforce and defend their intellectual property rights in the U.S. and Europe for many years and will now support this work from its new location in Shenzhen. The Chinese Ministry of Justice approved Fish’s application in November 2018, and the office opened on January 1, 2019.

Fish principal Ryan McCarthy is the firm’s Chief Representative in Shenzhen. He is joined by Yong (Eric) Peng, Ph.D.; Dr. Peng is fluent in Mandarin and English.

“Over our many years of working with Chinese companies, we have seen an extraordinary amount of research and development across a broad range of industries, including telecommunications, electronics, financial technology, life sciences, and medical devices,” said McCarthy. “China is rapidly emerging as an innovation leader, and we are well positioned to assist our Chinese clients in developing worldwide, world-class IP portfolios.”

Shenzhen is the innovation capital of China and is often referred to as China’s Silicon Valley. In November 2018, Forbes China put Shenzhen first on its list of the “Top 30 Most Innovative Chinese Cities 2018.” In calling Shenzhen the most innovative Chinese city, Forbes considered the number of newly applied-for patents (per capita and total), patent grants (per capita and total), international patents or PCT applications (per capita and total) and local government expenditures on science and technology.

Fish attorneys help Chinese companies obtain patent and trademark protection in the U.S. and Europe and represent Chinese companies in federal district and appeals courts, at the International Trade Commission (ITC) and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Fish’s office is in the newly opened China Resources Tower, No. 2666 South Keyuan Road, Nanshan District, Shenzhen.
